Do these actually go together?!

Yes! Absolutely – and I will explain why in this article!

When Jack was newborn, I was really lucky to be able to attend baby massage classes with my friends, and it was one of the most rewarding and amazing classes to do as a new parent! The bond you have with your baby and the ability you have to give your baby peace and relaxation through the massage techniques are so special!

I have been very fortunate to have been supported by the amazing company Basking Babies here in Essex where I am so lucky to be asked to attend their sessions and their coffee mornings so I can meet their parents and tell them all about what I do. I absolutely love being asked and seeing those gorgeous babies who are so happy and content following their massages!

Although we are running completely different classes for parents and you may wonder how nutrition and massage go together, they really do compliment each other! Personally I think all parents when they start weaning, if they haven’t done massage for their babies before, should join a baby massage class. Here are my reasons why.

The Benefits of Baby Massage for Digestive Health

Baby massage, a practice rooted in ancient traditions, has gained significant attention in modern parenting for its multitude of benefits. Among the numerous advantages, one of the most notable is its positive impact on a baby’s digestive system. This article explores how baby massage can enhance digestion and overall well-being in infants.

Relief from Colic and Gas

Colic and gas are common issues that cause discomfort and crying in babies. Massage can help alleviate these symptoms by promoting the expulsion of trapped gas and reducing the severity of colic episodes. Gentle, rhythmic strokes on the baby’s abdomen can help move gas through the intestines, providing relief from bloating and pain. Studies have shown that babies who receive regular massage sessions exhibit fewer colic symptoms compared to those who do not .

Stimulation of Bowel Movements

Regular massage can help stimulate bowel movements, which is particularly beneficial for babies who suffer from constipation. The gentle pressure applied during abdominal massage encourages peristalsis, the wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract. This stimulation helps prevent and relieve constipation, ensuring that the baby’s digestive system functions smoothly . A lot of babies when they start weaning will experience constipation as their digestive system is suddenly having to digest so much more than milk, and so learning how to use massage to help is so important.

Improved Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

Massage enhances blood circulation, including to the digestive organs. This increased blood flow can improve the efficiency of the digestive system, aiding in better digestion and nutrient absorption. When the digestive system is functioning optimally, babies are more likely to receive the full nutritional benefits from their feeds, contributing to their overall growth and development .

Reduction of Reflux Symptoms

Infant reflux, where stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, can be a distressing issue for both babies and parents. Massage can help reduce the frequency and severity of reflux episodes by promoting a more rapid movement of food through the digestive tract and ensuring the stomach empties more efficiently. Techniques that involve gentle upward strokes can be particularly effective in managing reflux symptoms .

Enhancement of the Parasympathetic Nervous System

The parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for ‘rest and digest’ activities, is activated during massage. When this system is stimulated, it promotes relaxation and improves the functioning of the digestive system. Babies often exhibit signs of contentment and relaxation during and after a massage session, indicating the activation of their parasympathetic nervous system, which in turn supports better digestion .

Promotion of Parent-Child Bonding

The benefits of baby massage extend beyond the physical to the emotional and psychological realms. The close physical contact and gentle touch involved in massage strengthen the bond between parent and child. This bonding can reduce stress levels in babies, which is known to positively influence digestive health. A relaxed and secure baby is less likely to suffer from digestive disturbances such as colic, gas, and constipation .

Conclusion

Incorporating baby massage into daily routines offers a multitude of benefits, particularly for the digestive health of infants. It provides relief from common digestive issues such as colic, gas, constipation, and reflux, while also enhancing overall digestion and nutrient absorption. Beyond the physical benefits, the practice fosters a deep emotional bond between parent and child, promoting a sense of security and well-being. As more research supports the positive effects of baby massage, it remains a valuable tool for parents seeking holistic ways to care for their infants.
